You never come back the way you come

Today we had to travel a long way back towards Santiago. The trip was meant to be about 30km including some big hills, but we managed to bake it longer. The markers on the Camino are done towards an end destination but we were walking back. Like yesterday this made it quite hard – the markers just aren’t easily visible from the other direction.
I had really wanted to walk back the way I came and what has become apparent be our lostness is that it just isn’t possible. We can never return to the place we have been before. The fact that things are always in flux means that we might go back to the placename, but we can never return to the place we first encountered. For us that also meant the pilgrims accommodation so we are in a hotel. No more sleeping bag for me, I have one more days walking and I am back in Santiago.
